Battle on the High Seas: New Maritime Broadband Competition
Now Inmarsat’s long awaited Global Xpress satellites are delivering service on a global basis, battle has been joined between Ku and Ka-band maritime VSAT services, as providers seek to upgrade L-band users to higher bandwidth. What will be the critical differentiating factors for these new services? Does the answer lie in value-added services such as video? Or will it come down to which solutions offer the cheapest bandwidth? Will VSAT become an off-the-shelf solution similar to L-band, and if so what will happen to the attractive gross margins which have incentivized many maritime distributors to add VSAT to their portfolio?
